Can this rope light be wired directly to a 12V battery or does it require a controller?

Yes you can wire this directly to a 12 volt power supply. Just make sure it is a 12 volt DC output and not AC. It doesn't require a controller unless you are wanting to dim the lights. We do sell remote controllers that can work with this light if needed to be able to dim.
